Abstract : Many groups of pilgrims are flocking to visit the Two Holy Mosques, which could cause some damage to the carpet of the Two Holy Mosques resulting from misuse, such as dirt and moisture (wet with water, oil and fats) or resulting from environmental factors, both stimulate the growth of micro-organisms and transfer bacterial diseases. Thus, the present research aims to improve the properties of the carpets of the Two Holy Mosques via finishing processes and treatment with different physical and chemical compounds to resist the dirty and microbial in order to fit the circumstances which the carpet faces against the environmental and biological effects. In the present study, some of chemical compounds from Chitosan and its derivatives were prepared to give the carpet the resistance against microbial . Additionally, some compounds of Fluorin were prepared to increase the carpet resistance against wetting and dirt. The carpet samples were treated with two methods, i.e. spraying and immersion. Testing of laboratory carpet samples were conducted after and before finishing process. The results proved that carpet resistant to wetting and dirt were negative before the chemical treatments. But, treatment with Thiourea chitosan and silver nitrate gave a higher resistance to microbial than the treatment with normal Chitosan. It appeared the percentage of resistance to bacteria increased with the increase in chitosan concentration and its derivatives and with the increase in the immersing time. The addition of Fluorin to Chitosan and its derivatives enhanced the carpet resistant to wetting and mottling, which increased with the increase in Fluorin concentration and its immersing time. Treatment with immersion method gave the carpet a higher resistance to wetting, bacteria, and mottling more than spraying method. Increasing the number of washing cycles, with both types of treatments, led to a decrease in the percentage resistance to bacteria, wetting and mottling. The reduction in these properties was more pronounced in the case of Chitosan: Fluorin treatment than in the case of Thiourea chitosan and Silver nitrate: Fluorin. The application of spraying method was more economical in cost, time and effort than immersion method, neverthless it gave nearly the same results as it requerd less time. Treatment of carpets with spraying method by Thiourea chitosan and silver nitrate: Fluorin can be repeated after washing it to maintain the efficiency of the carpet to resist microbial and dirt with the benefit of the extract of the material after treatment in the other processes. Awareness about the informations associated with furnishings throw putting labels on it . So , that the consumer can choose what is suitable for him. The findings of this study contribute in the development and improvement of the performance of carpets of the Two Holly Mosques and prolong their consuming life and achieving the protection to their visitors.
