Abstract : Introduction: Blood is a precious resource that must be managed according to specific guidelines to optimize patients’ outcomes and avoiding exposing them to risks. Poor utilization and ordering practices of blood components lead to wastage of components. A common pattern of wastage is ordering plasma unnecessarily and not transfusing it within 24 hours after which it is discarded. The aim of this study is to investigate whether an educational intervention targeting physicians would lead to reduction in transfusion and wastage of plasma. Methods: A multifaceted educational intervention was designed based on best available evidence for continuous professional education. It was implemented in 2018 within King Abdulaziz University Hospital, Jeddah Saudi Arabia. The educational intervention consisted of a predisposing element (an email and a knowledge-assessment survey), an enabling element (lecture and guidelines), and reinforcing element (regular reports and feedback). Results of the knowledge assessment survey are described and plasma transfusions and wastage rates from 2017,2018 and 2019 are compared. Results and Discussion: Among 60 physicians who answered the survey, 30% and 37% chose the correct answers for the first and second questions respectively. The monthly average number of plasma transfused was reduced after the intervention, but the rate of wastage was not improved. Conclusion: A transfusion knowledge gap is identified within practicing physicians at KAUH. A reduction in plasma transfusions was noted after the educational intervention but it did not result in a significant change in plasma wastage. Further initiatives including close involvement of members form other departments and nursing is advised.
