Abstract : Recent studies discussing accuracy, self-esteem, and oral communication usually either study the relation between self-esteem and oral communication or study the methods that teachers use within the Saudi context and their relationship to productive skills. However, the majority of studies do not predict the influence of accuracy on the development of students’ self-esteem to communicate orally in the Saudi context. This study fills this gap in the literature. The participants in this study were (N=93) preparatory year students in a medical college in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia for the interviews and classroom observations and (N=12) for the interviews. The current study undertakes a mixed research methods approach. The data is collected using three different research instruments, questionnaires, classroom observation, and interviews. Data is analyzed using SPSS software and Microsoft Excel for the quantitative data and NVivo for the qualitative data. The study looks at the influence of accuracy on EFL learners’ self-esteem for oral communication in a Saudi context. Results of the questionnaires show that the majority of students have an average to low self-esteem when it comes to speaking and their interviews echoed their responses to the questionnaires and showed a need for help in overcoming the anxiety they experience when speaking. In conclusion, accuracy seems not to have a positive influence on students’ self-esteem to use the language orally. It is recommended to conduct another study that is experimental to explore diverse teaching methods to compare between two groups of students, one focusing on accuracy and the other on fluency.
