The objective of the study was to propose competencies of nursery caregiver in accordance to the content analysis of the abecedarian approach in terms of the general framework and the caregivers’ competencies in three fields: knowledge, professionalism, and personality through the application of the content analysis methodology to the sample (the Abecedarian Approach). This was achieved by applying an analysis form to analyze the content of caregiver’s preparation program. The most important study results were: the objectives of the Abecedarian approach are related to the competencies of the three caregiver’s competencies that was accredited by the University of North Carolina, and based on scientific research studies, the program includes a variety of cognitive, professional and personal skills, including theories and strategies of learning and behavior guidance, child care areas, caregiving characteristics, effective communication skills. The results indicated that that the approach did not include some competencies, including: professional ethics, theories of child’s growth and children’s rights, the roles of caregivers, and the care of children with special needs. In accordance the findings of the study, a proposed caregivers competencies were presented, which include a range of professional competencies, representing the information, knowledge and theories that must be offered to the caregiver, the application of the skills involved in cognitive competencies, and the values, principles and personal skills that must be demonstrated. The researcher recommended designing early childhood preparation programs with inclusion of the professional competencies, taking into consideration the quality standards, academic accreditation and the national qualifications framework, and issuing an authorization for ethics of the caregiver's profession at the nursery stage. |
