Abstract : Background: Providing successful wound management has become the goal for all health institutions. Wound vacuum assisted closure (VAC) therapy was developed to facilitate wound healing. Nurses who are responsible for patients with wounds need a particular level of expertise and education to ensure optimum wound care. Aim The study aimed to assess the nurses’ knowledge and practices regarding wound VAC therapy. Methodology: A quantitative descriptive design was used in this study. Setting: Surgical inpatient and surgical intensive care unit at King Abdulaziz University Hospital (KAUH). Subject: A convenience sampling was used to select the study participants. The sample was selected from all surgical inpatient nurses, and surgical ICU nurses at KAUH. Tools: Two tools were developed by the researcher. Tool I: Demographic and knowledge assessment questionnaire regarding wound VAC therapy. Tool II: Questionnaire to assess nurses’ practices regarding wound VAC therapy. Results: Nurses’ wound VAC total knowledge test scores ranged from 21 to 45 out of 50 with a mean of (37.32 ± 5.12), percentage of mean is 74.64 %. Significant correlation was found between nurses' total wound VAC knowledge test score and frequency of handling patients with VAC therapy. Nurses’ wound VAC practice assessment over all response is 2.23 out of 3 which is considered as (frequently). There were weak positive correlations between nurses’ wound VAC knowledge total mean score and overall practice response. Spearman correlation coefficients were 0.206, p < 0.05. Conclusion: The nurses in the study have inadequate knowledge and practices regarding wound VAC therapy. Therefore, nurses need to improve their theoretical foundation and practices regarding wound VAC therapy.
