Abstract : Abstract The aim of this study is to identify objectively the spring season Sudan low and its northerly oriented trough known as the Red Sea Trough (RST). The algorithm designed to identify the RST has been applied to six hourly sea level pressure fields, taken from National Center for Environmental Prediction and the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCEP/NCAR) reanalysis, for the period 1955-2014.The climatology of the detected lows and associated troughs shows that approximately 69.5% of the spring time the Sudan low was active, while 56.2% of this time the Sudan low extended northward forming the RST. This study identifies three main zones of generation of the RSTs. These three zones are located over Sudan, South Sudan, and over Red Sea, producing 28.14%, 61.76%, and 5.35% respectively of the total RSTs. Three main outermost areas of termination has been discerned, located west, east, and north of the Red Sea, receiving 17.11%, 54.88%, and 22.11% of the total generated RSTs.
