Abstract : Objectives: The present study aimed to compare the shaping ability of two Ni Ti rotary files, namely; ProTaper Next and HyFlex EDM using Micro-Computed Tomography Study (Micro-CT). To our knowledge, no study was found in the literature that investigated the shaping ability of the newly introduced HyFlex EDM. Methods: Forty-four curved mesial root canals of mandibular molars were divided randomly into two groups of 22 canals each. In Group 1, canals were instrumented using HyFlex EDM one single file (#25/~). In Group 2, canals were instrumented with ProTaper Next files up to X2 (#25/. 06) to the WL following manufacturer’s recommendations. Experimented canals from the two groups were scanned using Micro-CT before and after instrumentation and canals geometrical dimensions were recorded. Representative 3D reconstructions were made. Calculated parameters were: changes in canal volume (∆volume) and canal surface area (∆ surface area); as well as transportation and centering ration. The last two parameters were calculated from preselected 4 cross sectional images, namely; at 2, 4, 6, and 8 mm from the apices. Independent t-test was used to compare the changes in the aforementioned parameters, Paired t-test and ANOVA for repeated measures were used to compare within groups. Significance level was set at P value ≤ 0.05. Results: A significant increase in canal volume and surface area after instrumentation was found for both tested groups 1 and 2. No significant differences between both tested instruments in this respect. At 6 mm distance from the apex; a significant lower transportation value and higher centering ratio was calculated for the HyFlex EDM group as compared to the ProTaper Next group (0.091± .068 versus 0.137± .089), and (0.63±0.19 versus 0.37±0.27) respectively. Both instruments groups resulted in a minute canals transportation at the most apical cross-section (0.059 ± .045 and 0.068 ± .054) and reached a statistically significant maximum value at level 8 (0.185mm ± .122mm and 0.199 mm ± .119mm for the HyFlex EDM and ProTaper Next respectively). Conclusions: Both tested instruments design namely; HyFlex EDM and ProTaper Next were able to shape curved canals with minimum discrepancies and comparable efficiencies. HyFlex EDM- single file- outweigh ProTaper Next- multi files system- in producing statistically significant less transportation and more centered preparation at the mid-root level. Within the limitations of this study; HyFlex EDM single file can be used as the sole instrument for shaping curved canals.
