Abstract : To assess the arid lands agroforestry potential, afield experiment was performed at the King Abdulaziz University Agricultural Research Station at Hada Al-Sham during the 2013 and 2014 seasons. Three forages (Clitoria, Alfalfa and Blue panic) were evaluated in a Ziziphus passed agroforestry system. Under three different levels of nitrogen fertilizer (0 kg N/ha, 200 kg N/ha and 400 kg N/ha in the form of commercial Urea,46%) and three distances from the ziziphus tree trunk (1m ,2m and 4m).Data from ziziphus trees without forage were also recorded for comparison. A split split plot design was used . Forage crops yield and quality were measured at ten cuts during the experimental period. Impact of agroforestry on Ziziphus tree number of branches, branch length, fruit production, leaf area index and land equivalent ration were also recorded. Agro climatology data and soil properties were also performed to estimate the agroforestry impact on soil properties. Statistical analysis described significant impact for different forages, planting distance nitrogen fertilizer and the 2-factors and 3-factors interactions on all studied traits. The highest fresh and dry yield /ha/cut and overall the ten cuts were obtained from the intercropped crops under 400kg N/ha at 2m distance from ziziphus trees. Total fresh forge yield /ha/10 cuts of the intercropped alfalfa, blue panic and clitoria under 400 kg N/ha and 2m distance were 92.01 t/ha, 186.4 t/ha and 74.66 t/ha respectively. The highest protein content overall the different cuts were 20.37%, 11.51% and 18.65% from the intercropped alfalfa, blue panic and clitoria ,respectively ,fertilized with 400 kg N/ha at 1m distance from ziziphus trees. Ziziphus tree fruit yield and yield components significantly increased under the intercropping plantation. Also the land equivalent ratio was 1.81 under the intercropping system. The obtained results are important for producing forage crops intercropped with the trees in the same area.
