Abstract : Saudi Arabia is a poor country in water resources. One of its critical problem is water scarcity; this problem becomes more complex when natural water resources becomes limited and costly. Due to imbalance between increasing water demand and limited water supply, the problem will prolong and becomes difficult to solve. To overcome this problem and meet increasing water demand, the use of non-traditional water resource like treated wastewater would be a promising solution. This study has been applied on the wastewater treatment plant of Hadda region and the soil at the downstream site of Wadi Fatima. Originally, Hadda plant dumps its treated wastewater in the main stream of wadi Fatima, due to which a long water course extend to red sea cost is created causing a bunch of environmental processes. To study the capability of Wadi Fatima soil in purifying the products of Hadda plant, representative soil samples were collected and lab experiments were conducted. A flow system was installed in the lab consisting of Acrylic soil Columns, supply reservoir, and samples collection apparatus. There are two objectives in this study, the first was evaluation of Wadi Fatima soil efficiency in threating the secondary and tertiary treated wastewater of Hadda plant. The second objective was study the impact of wastewater flow on the soil properties as well as numerical simulation of ion exchange process of wastewater. The texture of the studies soil was sandy clay. Results show that the soil has been impacted by the flow of wastewater where its physical, chemical, and hydraulic parameters has been changed. On the other hand, HYDRUS-1D computer code has been applied to simulate the ion exchange process between wastewater influent from one side and soil water column and exchangeable cations on the other side. The code succeeded in the simulation after providing all input parameters. Results of the code was in a good agreement with those obtained by experiments. Findings support the use of HYDRUS-1D in evaluating soil efficiency of known properties and flow conditions. Designed experiments and the computer simulation software provided a considerable knowledge in evaluating Wadi Fatima soil efficiency. The efficiency ranged from 25% to 65%, where all pollutant parameter found within the limits of Ministry of Water and Electricity and FAO standards for restricted and unrestricted irrigation as well as other uses in agriculture and industry.
