Abstract : The city of Al-Mozahymya witnessed a tremendous urban expansion over the past half-century . And there for, this thesis tried to investigate urban expansion in Al-Mozahymya between 1950 to 2010. To identify urban development, aerial photographs of 1950 and 1970, and the SPOT satellite data for the year 1990, and the GeoEye satellite data for the year 2010, were obtained. Using geographic information systems, the study showed that Al-Mozahymya city went through four stages of urban growth. As a result, several factors affected and directed the process of urban growth in Al-Mozahymya city . Impact urban expansion in Al-Mozahymya was apparent. The study has shown a decrease of agricultural lands due to urban sprawl on them, and that the urban built-up area has increased 103 times, and revealed the emergence of open space within the city. As it turns out that urban expansion has been in all directions except the north, where growth has been very limited, and that more developments are expanding to the southwest.
