Abstract : This investigation was carried out in 2008 and 2009 to study the knowledge levels of date Palm farmers and the agricultural extension agents in Al-Madinah Al-Monawara region. The study revealed that 3/4 of farmers have an area of 100 donum or less of date palm tree. Fourteen date palm cultivars are cultivated in this region. Mean fruit yield of the tree is around 40 kg/tree. Around 78 % farmers plant the off-shoots from their farms. The main date palm production problems from the opinions of the farmers were low irrigation water, high salinity level in soil and water ,absence of trained labors, low extension knowledge and pest infestation. And low knowledge levels were found among the date palm farmers about the pest infestation and its control. Around 70% of the farmers stated that no extension role or field meetings were offered to them. Around 50% of the farmers take the date palm cultivation knowledge from their families or neighbors. For improvement of the date palm production the farmers see that this can be achieved through pest control increasing the trained labors, increasing the irrigation water, conducting training programs, availability of the fertilizers with low cost ,good extension role and making a good marketing system. As for the agricultural extension agents, only 20% of them had university degrees, and 20% did not have any trained program. The main date palm production problems in Al-Madinah Al-Monawarah region by the extension agents point of view are high salinity level of soil and water, high water table, insect and disease pests, low number of trained labors low modern irrigation system and low irrigation quantity. Concerning the knowledge level of the extension agents , around 40% of them don't know any thing about the pollen grains storage, 10 % don't know any thing about the fruit thinning or the pest control. About 20% of the agricultural extension agents stated that no extension role was found for the date palm farmers and 20-30% of them stated that the knowledge sources of the agricultural extension agents were mainly from the Arabic brochures, agricultural magazines and the local training short programs. Around 30 % of the agricultural agents stated that no field training or field meetings were done for the farmers. For improvement the date palm tree yield in Al-Madinah Al-Monawarah region and kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the agricultural extension agents see that this is possible by application of the modern irrigation methods and systems, increasing the trained labors, increasing the funds to the farmers, good fertilization ,pest control and good effective extension role.
